What thoughts, visions and feelings become possible with our attention tuned not to the roadway or the street signs, but instead to the universe of living beings thriving in the cracks of the pavement?
We are living in a time of rapid change-- While the 24 hour news cycle keeps us drowning in information of various qualities-- could it be that nearby nature has something to offer us too if only we would listen? The artists in this show have spent time with the life in cracks of the sidewalks of Waawiiyaatanong (also known as Metro Detroit), here are their dispatches. The works in this show demonstrate that when we spend time with the wilds found in a sidewalk crack, the history of each place, our inner voices, and the convivial otherness of our more than human neighbors greets us, beckoning us into new ways of being in the world.
A couple words of gratitude:
This exhibition including all the materials and promotion was sponsored by Planet Detroit. Planet Detroit creates independent environmental journalism about Metro Detroit that is absolutely critical to learning to live well in this place. If you haven't already subscribed to their newsletter or followed them on social media-- I recommend it!
Also, thank you to all the wonderful artists who shared their work with us through the open call!
